Description
The aircraft carrier Akagi was completed in 1927 at the Kure Naval Arsenal. Along with the Kaga, it was the first large aircraft carrier of the Imperial Japanese Navy based on the Washington Naval Treaty.
The flight deck adopted a unique three-tiered structure of the Japanese Navy. The lower tier served as the launching deck, and the upper tier was used both for launching and landing aircraft. The middle tier was not used as a flight deck due to the extension of the bridge and the installation of two 20cm twin gun turrets. A distinctive feature of the ship was its large sloping funnel on the starboard side, along with a smaller vertical funnel, causing the top flight deck to shift its centerline to the port side.
In 1935, a major modernization overhaul was carried out at the Sasebo Naval Arsenal, transforming it into a full-length flight deck and significantly refreshing its appearance.
The model kit replicates the era of the three-tiered flight deck before this major modernization. The kit configuration allows for the creation of either the early version (Note: The immediate post-completion state before the 20cm twin gun turrets were installed cannot be replicated) or the mid-version (1934-35) which had a small temporary bridge on the starboard side of the top deck. The kit includes six Type 90 naval fighters and six Type 13 No. 2 naval attack aircraft.
