Bell AH-1S Cobra
The Bell AH-1S Cobra is an attack helicopter used for ground forces support. The Cobra series was developed as an escort for the CH-47 Chinook transport helicopter during the Vietnam War, improved from the UH-1 Iroquois.
The main improvements from the Iroquois are concentrated in the front part of the fuselage. The frontal area of the Iroquois's body was reduced by about a third. The pilot and gunner are arranged in a tandem (vertical row) layout. Stabilizer wings have been added on both sides of the fuselage, enhancing stability during high-speed flight and acting as a platform for mounting missiles and rocket projectiles.
The main rotor adopts a door hinge style rotor system, aimed at increasing the speed and agility of the aircraft. The primary weapon is the Emerson TAT102 turret, equipped with either a 7.62mm machine gun or a 20mm cannon. Thanks to a helmet-mounted sight system linked with the turret on the front, it allows for highly accurate shooting. As it often flies at a low altitude and relatively slow speed, making it susceptible to enemy attacks, the cockpit is fully equipped with bulletproof protection.
The Cobra series is mainly used by the U.S. Army and Marine Corps. The design and shape differ between the Army and Marine Corps. The latest type of Cobra in the Army's specifications is the AH-1S Cobra. This type is retrofitted with the Lycoming T53-L-703 turboshaft engine. With increased engine output, the power transmission system has been reinforced. Additionally, the increase in output provided more room for weapon capacity. Its maximum armament includes 8 TOW missiles, 38 rockets, a 20mm triple-barreled cannon on the nose, and 760 rounds of ammunition.
