Description
The Sikorsky SH-3H Sea King is an anti-submarine warfare helicopter used by the United States Navy. It was adopted as a successor to the previously used HSS-1 helicopter and is a large twin-engine turbine helicopter.
As the SH-3H Sea King was developed for shipboard use, its five main rotor blades are designed to fold automatically, and the tail boom at the rear also features a folding mechanism. The fuselage of the SH-3H Sea King, which primarily operates over maritime regions, is designed with a watertight semi-monocoque hull, and the combination of auxiliary floats on the fuselage sides enables good water landing capabilities.
The helicopter is equipped with two parallel-mounted T-58 turboshaft engines, providing high power output and increased safety in the event of engine trouble. Its anti-submarine equipment includes features such as a Magnetic Anomaly Detector (MAD) bird and sonobuoys. Additionally, when fighter aircraft are taking off or landing on an aircraft carrier, the SH-3H Sea King is used as a rescue helicopter and is also employed for transport and multipurpose missions.
